This month, I have the pleasure of throwing baby showers for two wonderful women, expecting their second babies in late December and early January.
This afternoon, we celebrated the upcoming arrival of Ali’s little girl with a warm and cozy fireside lunch: bruschetta paninis, personal mac ‘n’ cheese, candy apple punch, hot cocoa with cherry vanilla marshmallows (pink, of course!), and chocolate candy cane cupcakes from Trophy Cupcakes.
Instead of routine baby shower games (don’t we moms end up eating enough mashed peas as it is?), we made salt dough ornaments for Ali’s baby’s first Christmas. A great activity that keeps guests busy, but allows for lots of chatting and giggling.
To make salt dough ornaments, mix 4 cups of flour with 1 cup of table salt and 1.5 cups of warm water. Knead dough, and add food coloring as desired (food coloring paste works best.) Create ornaments (see photo above for ideas) and “bake” in the microwave for 3 minutes, checking each minute for burning.
To thank Ali’s guests for celebrating with us, we treated them to a set of hot cocoa mix and homemade cherry vanilla marshmallows, decked out with pink labels.
Want to make hot cocoa and homemade marshmallows at your house? Stay tuned – we’ll be featuring these recipes (and other yummy holiday homemade gifts) next week.
